Girls Volleyball Roster Set, Ready to Compete

Coach Raul Papaleo confirmed the rosters for the 2013 Laguna girls volleyball teams this past weekend as the squads get ready for the Queens Court Tournament this Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 24-25.

The varsity will be in the 16-team elite division at the 34-court American Sports Center in Anaheim and is seeded third. In pool play Saturday morning, the Breakers will face Goleta’s Dos Pueblos at 8 a.m. followed later that morning with Riverside’s ML King and fifth seed Santa Margarita.

JV opens at the same venue with Newbury Park and will also meet Mission Hills’ Alemany and Irvine’s Northwood in their 28-team bracket.  Frosh-soph are in a similar size tournament and open with El Toro and will meet Newbury Park and Notre Dame/SO in pool play.

Among the players this year are the daughters of two former successful head coaches with sophomore Sage Patchell making varsity, and Kara Soylular on frosh soph.

Shawn Patchell was a head coach from 1998 thru 2001 (80-45) before taking a collegiate position with BYU in men’s volleyball. The family recently returned to the area with Patchell taking the men’s head coaching job at Concordia. Mike Soylular coached four seasons at Laguna from 1991 to 1994 (102-21) before conflict of interest rules forced him to decide between club and high school programs. This exclusive Southern Section CIF conflict rule has since been abolished.
