High school student Mia Salvini received an Award of Merit from California State PTA for her photograph entitled “Palm of My Hands” in the 2014 PTA Reflections arts competition.

Of the 225 Laguna Beach students who participated, two others earned division winner recognition and advanced to the state level of competition: LBHS student Austin Fickman for film, and El Morro student Oscar Barajas for visual arts.

The Reflections program encourages students to explore arts by creating original works in any medium around a theme.

Mia explained captured this year’s theme, “Believe, Dream, Inspire,” by composing a photo that depicted “how people like me feel when getting closer to our future, and seeing how all of our dreams could come true if we just focus on that ball of light. To create the photograph I used a slow shutter speed and had my sister stand still while I shined lights.”

Oct. 24 is the submission deadline for this year; the theme is “The World Would Be A Better Place If…” Entry forms: www.capta.org, under “Programs.”
