Teaching students to live and learn in service of others underpins the Community Learning Center at Top of the World Elementary School.

Several CLC families put that philosophy into practice by visiting the Door of Faith orphanage in Baja California, Mexico, earlier this month.

Prior to the trip, they learned of its mission caring for 104 current orphans and organized a school-wide drive for supplies.

The families delivered trunk loads of laundry detergent, soap, diapers, wipes, paper towels, toilet paper, toothpaste, shampoo, and other items. They also brought supplies to cook a hot lunch for residents and its 40 staff members.

Local restaurants, including Reunion Kitchen, Kitchen in the Canyon and Maro Grill, contributed both food and funds, which were presented to founder DJ Schuetze.

Schuetze told his benefactors that Door of Faith underwrites a college education for each resident.

Watch for CLC students selling their handmade items Saturday, March 25, at the Laguna Beach Farmer’s Market. Proceeds will also benefit the orphanage.
