How grand is the entrance to the Montage resort? Not wide enough for a BMW 325, which crashed through the front doors of the lobby and into a wall about 4:49 a.m. last Wednesday, May 21, and caused what police described as extensive damage.

The driver, Leilani Hughes, 51, of Orange, was charged with felony vandalism, suspicion of driving while under the influence and resisting arrest, Sgt. Louise Callus said.

Police initially took her to a hospital. When the medical staff prepared to release Hughes, she attempted to flee and had to be chased down by officers, Callus said.

Hotel spokeswoman Kacey Spies-Bruno characterized the damage as minimal. “We were back to normal operations within the hour,” she said. Hughes was not a guest of the resort, she said.
