Mozambique’s Vans Can Help Solve the Problem

Editor,

I read the perspective from one resident in Laguna Beach about the restaurant Mozambique’s challenges and parking issues in the nearby neighborhood (Woods Cove). His suggestion was for neighbors to just “Deal With It”. Really? This is a real issue for neighbors, not a complaint from a child about their sibling taking too much of the back seat of the station wagon.

The real issue is not the customer parking for Mozambique. It’s the employee parking (who have special permits to park in the area). If you live in that neighborhood and a Mozambique employee parks in front of your house, gate or driveway you are forced to park in front of someone else’s house, gate or driveway. In turn, occupants of those houses must park elsewhere causing a chain effect of nobody parking in front of their own home. Then come nasty notes on your windshield creating hostility amongst neighbors. This happens daily.

Is sharing parking spaces with parents of Laguna Beach High school or patrons of a free concert at Bluebird Park really the same thing as sharing parking with employees of a restaurant? Absolutely not. Those are community events that make our village stronger. Mozambique is a restaurant.

The writer of the previous memo mentioned five new vans purchased by Mozambique to shuttle customers. How about shuttling their employees from a parking lot up the Canyon Road or even South Laguna as tourists are meant to do. Those new vans are sitting idle during most employee arrival and departure hours anyway. Why not use those vans to solve the parking problem with the neighbors? As a gesture of goodwill, they may consider offering something consistently special to the neighbors as a “thank you” for dealing with these issues. This is good business (see definition of “Kamaaina rate” in Hawaii). The neighbors of Mozambique could be their best customers if this was dealt with logically.
