A classical quartet will add color of a different sort to the galleries of the Laguna Art Museum beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 14, with the Hutchins Consort.

Laguna Beach Live’s Lucinda Prewitt and museum executive director Malcolm Warner are teaming up to offer a year-long museum music series, based on the belief that First Thursday’s Artwalk crowds might return for music as well as art.

Hence, they decided to dedicate the second Thursday of every month to chamber concerts. “We hope to encourage people to get more involved with the museum,” said Prewitt, adding that a one-time museum admission equaled the cost of a month’s museum membership. (Concerts are free for members or with museum admission.)

Encouraged by the success of free chamber concerts held at the Laguna College of Art and Design during the fall, Prewitt and Warner selected music and musicians that had performed there. “At some point we might co-ordinate music with art shows,” said Prewitt. So far they have selected California musicians and composers in keeping with the museum’s mission to spotlight California art.

“We are aiming for variety, for music that fits well into a museum setting including guitars and wind instruments,” said Prewitt.

Summer programing is listed on www.lagunaartmuseum.org
