Baby Carlee is thriving thanks to specially trained nurses that detected heart disease in the newborn.

Thanks to the generosity and commitment of the Mission Hospital support group Valiant Women, 61 nurses were recently awarded scholarships to pursue professional development.

Last year, one of these training sessions taught Mission Hospital nurses about newborn heart screening, says a statement from the hospital with campuses in Laguna Beach and Mission Viejo. And a 2013 newborn, Carlee, who was not further identified, was the first baby to benefit, when nurses detected a congenital heart disease that could be fatal without the proper treatment. Following the diagnosis, Carlee underwent lifesaving corrective heart surgeries, and today she is thriving.

This year, Mission Hospital nurses will receive advanced training in critical care, trauma, oncology, perinatal, and other holistic nursing practices.

This year 86 nurses requested support totaling nearly $260,000. Every dollar raised through Valiant Women memberships benefit Mission Hospital’s nurses and patient care.
