An Ode to Walking in Laguna

Walking Laguna Beach is fun and it’s the most underrated thing in town to do!  I am 80 and haven’t had a car since 2003. I love taking the big OCTA buses and/or our city “Main Line” buses, subsidized by a generous grant from OCTA, to the patisserie on the alley (best bakery in town) or Jack’s and then walking downtown on the beach, tides and surf conditions allowing, from the Oak St. overlook.

Watch for wet, exposed rocks, especially near Pacific Edge Hotel and switch to Coast Hwy. Catalina St., the alleys, Glenneyre and Coast Hwy. are alternate routes.

Crescent Bay Park, where you can see the seals on the rocks, and the neighborhood gardens all over town are as different as the owners. And alleys and canyons, like Laguna Canyon with it’s wilderness parks, and off Woodland St., Faireywood Lane, Roosevelt Lane and Victory Walk are full of surprises.

I grew-up on my dad’s used car lot on Manchester Ave. in L.A., so I have “clunkeritis.” I love cars, and Laguna has an exotic variety that are better seen when walking than when driving.

The Boardwalk, Heisler Park, Treasure Island Park, Moulton Meadows, Alta Laguna Park, the Village Green in South Laguna and “The Ranch” in Aliso Canyon are great destinations and rest spots.
