Tuesday night I attended the City Council special meeting about financing the now $42 million parking garage where the Council voted 3-2 in favor of the project. I was astonished to hear a public referendum is not necessary for public debt paid for by parking meters.
City Manager John Pietig revealed this city runs on parking meter money, so much so he is leveraging the parking garage debt-service by twiddling the knobs on all the parking meters, citywide if necessary.
As long as our city is addicted to money from parking meters we will continue to suffer from a lack of parking and bumper to bumper auto congestion.
