Whether you hike, bike, explore or volunteer, the opportunities abound to get out into the acres of wilderness surrounding Laguna Beach. The weather is perfect, the New Year’s resolutions are fresh; what are you waiting for?

Beginning Mountain Bike Ride-Jan. 10: Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer mountain bike trail assistants will teach mountain biking basics and trail etiquette from 8:30-10:30 a.m. on this 6.8-mile ride over steep and uneven terrain. Bring bike suitable for off-pavement riding, sturdy shoes, helmet, gloves, water and snack. Volunteer mountain bike trail assistants will also lead an experienced riding group at the same time. California Native Plants in the Winter, Jan. 10: Learn about the seasonal life of California native plants from 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. with Laguna Canyon Foundation volunteer naturalist on a 2.5 mile hike in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, 18751 Laguna Canyon Road.

Nature Walk, Jan. 10: All ages can join naturalists from 9-10:30 a.m. on a nature walk on mostly paved roads. Meet at the Nature Center O’Neill Regional Park, 30982 Trabuco Canyon Road, Trabuco Canyon. 949-923-2260. Parking $5. This free hike repeats on Jan. 17, 24 and 31.

Campfire Program, Jan. 10: All ages are welcome from 7-8 p.m. Saturday nights in January at Caspers Wilderness Park, 33401 Ortega Highway, San Juan Capistrano, for a campfire program that may include a slide presentation, wilderness safety, games and activities for children, animal adaptations, skins and skulls, a live animal demonstration and a chance to visit the Nature Center. Modjeska House Tour, Jan. 10: Take a docent-led tour of the historic house and grounds from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at 25151 Serrano Road, Lake Forest. Advance reservations required. Call 949-923-2230 or visit: ocparks.com/modjeskahouse/ Cost: $5 per person.

Wilderness Walking Club, Jan. 11: Ages 12 and up can enjoy a moderate three-mile walk in Laguna Coast Wilderness Park, 18751 Laguna Canyon Road, from 2-4:30 p.m. to Barbara’s Lake.

California Native Plants: Tools & Building, Jan. 13: Ages 12 and up can learn about the uses of California native plants on a two-mile hike from 9 -11 a.m. at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park’s James Dilley Preserve.
