Laguna College of Art and Design hired Jim Wooley as its new director of campus safety and security.

Since joining the college last November, Wooley began training faculty and staff for certification in emergency preparedness and strengthening partnerships with local police and fire departments, says a college statement. Two-thirds of LCAD staff now are certified in the basics of emergency preparedness.

“The safety and security of the entire LCAD community is my top priority,” a statement from Wooley said. Wooley leads two campus safety officers, Bryan Heggie and Dave Becket.

Two years ago, student Nina Fitzpatrick was struck and killed in a collision while crossing between college facilities, bisected by Laguna Canyon Road. With pressure from city and college officials, Caltrans installed a more visible traffic signal outside the main campus in the wake of her death. A lawsuit filed by Fitzpatrick’s parents against Caltrans and the motorist, Grace Velure, of St. Paul, Minn., is set for trial Sept. 26. In November, she pled guilty to a criminal charge.

Wooley previously headed security at Santa Ana College.
