Pet Rescuer in Need of Rescue Herself

Gina Kantzabedian

Supporters of Gina Kantzabedian, founder of Animal Crackers Pet Rescue in Laguna Beach, have organized a from 6 to 9 p.m. fundraiser Wednesday, June 27, at Mozambique restaurant, 1740 S. Coast Highway, to help the non-profit stay on its feet.

A $25 donation is suggested at the event, which will include food, a live and silent auction and kudos for Katzabedian’s tireless work saving displaced and abandoned pets, said Catherine Helshoj, an organizer and animal rights advocate.

Board member Stacey Zee Brettin said the Animal Crackers store, which supports the non-profit, lost its lease and will need to relocate by Nov. 1. Now, it’s Kantzabedian’s mission in danger of becoming homeless unless she can find alternative space that could accommodate animals, Zee Brettin said.

Kantzabedian spends an average of $870 for vaccinations, spay and neutering on a typical rescue. Animal Crackers is strictly a “zero kill” rescue, which is why the “toughest cases” literally land in her lap.

She imposes strict screening on every potential pet adopter, including a house visit and reference check to ensure the family and animal are ideal for each other. She offer free grooming for a year, allowing her to continue to assess the health of the animal.
