On the Pitch in Ireland

Evan Williams, defender, takes possession during Vase semi-final match versus English team, Ipswich Town. Final score: Strikers 4, Ipswich 0.

Laguna Beach High School sophomore Evan Williams and his Strikers FC teammates competed in Northern Ireland’s Milk Cup.

The 30th annual tournament hosted 46 teams from five continents whose players lived in the dorms at the University of Ulster in Coleraine. Strikers junior and premier teams won at friendly warm-up matches in their home stadium in Belfast.

The July 22 tournament’s unique structure started with each team playing three teams and their standings determining which tournament trophy — Globe, Vase, Bowl, or Plate  — they would pursue

Junior Strikers played for Vase in the final against all-star team from North Dublin, resulting in a 1-0 win. The premier played their Globe final match versus Etoile Lusitana (Senegal, Africa).  Exhausted from their late night semi-final match versus Man U, the Strikers lost their energy in the second half and could not keep up with the consistent intense play of their opponent and lost 0-2.
