Plea to Save Trees

Editor,

Please come to the Laguna Beach School Board meeting June 9 at 6 p.m. to stand and speak up for the trees around Laguna Beach High School.

Unfortunately many of the older palms, majestic old eucalyptus trees, some probably well over 100 years old, and many other trees were removed around the high school several months ago.

Yes, there was plenty of dead brushy bushes around the high school that were in dire need of being removed, but removing many of the older well-established and beautiful trees was a travesty.

The new landscaping around the school replaced the trees removed with smaller red-flowering and lemon-scented gum eucalyptus trees, as well as coastal live oaks, and a lovely assortment of drought resistant plants. Now again these trees are under attack and are being threatened with removal because of a few people who think these trees don’t belong in our community. One being so bold as to say these types of trees don’t belong in our town.

As Lagunans we must be stewards of our environment and stand up for the beautiful trees we have inherited and preserve them for our children to appreciate and be inspired by. So that maybe they too might become artists some day, as so many have in the past, immortalizing the Laguna we call home and love in their beautiful paintings.

  1. Karen,
Thank you for writing your sentiments regarding the beautiful
trees by the high school along St. Anns drive.
We have lived in Laguna for over 30 years, and I want to say that I
    agree with everything you said.
So many people I know are saddened about the removal of the trees.
Open any art book depicting Laguna’s landscape and you will see the beautiful paintings of Eucalyptus, and Palms, by plain air painters. Those trees do belong here for future generations to enjoy.
Go to the Laguna art Museum and take a look…get educated!
This is not about the trees; it’s about certain entitled individuals who want a better view of the ocean.
