Over 50 student dancers guided by six professional guest choreographers will perform in Perception, Laguna Beach High School’s winter concert this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 8-10, at 7:30 p.m. at the Artists’ Theatre.

This winter concert features the works of Lisa Jay and Danielle Pigneri, the department’s instructors, along with guest choreographers. Dance styles include fierce tribal energies, ethereal ballet, the funk of ‘50s clubs, to alien moves of earth invaders, incorporating hip-hop, ballet and jazz.

Included in the show are three student pieces.  “I Can Transform Ya” by senior Nicolas Leighton and junior Natalee Palmer, a hilarious hip-hop romp with a mad scientist with his run-amok robots.  “Tea Party,” choreographed by senior Sarah Busic, is inspired by the delightful antics of the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, only the story goes dark as the lovely-but-evil hostess turns on her guests.  Finally, Laura Otsu’s “Home” is created from a senior’s perspective of saying goodbye to her childhood home and venturing out into the world to create a new place for herself.  “Senioritis” seems to have struck these young choreographers in an intriguing mix of two parts madness and one part sadness.

Department head Jay has created, “Remember”, in honor of the 10th anniversary of 9/11.  Vocalists Karina Parker and Macarena Rivera sing “Amazing Grace” in the opening moments of this sober reflection. Pigneri once again delights with her vision of a bizarre alien invasion.  And the beloved hip-hop genius Darrien Henning has created another hip-hop fantasy, which could be described as part “99%” manifesto, part Arabian dream.  These are just some of the highlights!

Box office: (949) 497-7769.  Credit card orders accepted.  Tickets available at the door.
