Reader Questions Coyote Tale

Editor,

I just read John Fischer’s story about the coyote and one of his dogs. I’m sorry to learn of the loss of his small dog as my own small dog is very dear to me. However, a number of details mentioned in the story raised my eyebrows. Mr. Fischer has his grandchild in a back bedroom well after dark, with the full knowledge that coyotes prowl the area. Why would any responsible adult leave a baby in an open bedroom after dark knowing there are coyotes about? His letter mentioned, (over and over) that his wife insists on leaving the bedroom doors wide open. House policy, I guess but maybe not a safe one.

Mr. Fischer ignores for some time (the original online account mentioned him being in the kitchen and thinking nothing of the barking as it could be a guest) the fierce barking of his dogs. In my experience most dogs run to the door at which they expect someone to enter. (His letter doesn’t match the online story, so I assume he made changes to make himself look less culpable. Did he think the guest was entering through the bedroom? Why not react immediately to this barking and run to the bedroom. (again the story online is a bit different) Did he forget that there are coyotes about or forgot there was a baby in the bedroom?

Does John Fisher have fencing around his property to protect his dogs? I’m guessing not much or not high enough? Are there no protective barriers around the back doors of the bedroom? Common sense tells you that if you have open doors critters may come in. Stories about coyotes roaming around backyards to hunt dogs and cats or eat their food have been circulating for some time. Mr. Fisher seems to have ignored common sense practices for keeping his grandchildren and pets safe. Will we find out that he leaves dog food outside or in the bedroom? Coyotes are very clever. I know of people who have lost their small dogs due to coyote attacks so it’s best to be safety conscious especially if you are taking care of little children.

We shouldn’t blame coyotes for doing what is normal behavior for a coyote. As Einstein was once quoted as saying: “Two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not yet completely sure about the universe.”
