The winter jazz series returns to the Seven-Degrees event center, 891 Laguna Canyon Rd., with seven concerts Jan. 20-April 13.

The Latin Jazz Syndicate, featuring Bijon Watson on trumpet, opens the 6 p.m. series on Wednesday, Jan. 20, and is followed on Feb. 3 by guitarist Peter Sprague Quartet. The Ron Kobayashi Trio with vocalist Daryl Walker play on Feb. 17.

Braziliian guitarist Teka performs on March 2. Vocalist Sarah Gazarek with pianist Josh Nelson and a tribute to Freddie Hubbard and Wayne Shorter featuring Ricky Woodard on saxophone and Bijon Watson on trumpet are scheduled.

Closing the series on April 13 will be Hammond B-3 sensation Akiko, Jeff Hamilton on drums and Graham Dechter on guitar.

Open Mic Night Opens to Storytellers

Former DimeStories hosts Michele McCormick and Ed Kaufman will host an expanded open mic night on Sunday, Jan. 17, at Laguna Beach Books, 1200 S. Coast Highway.

original, three-minute stories, poems or even a self-written song. Attendees will have an opportunity to shape the future direction of the event. Wine, cheese and conversation at 5 p.m.; readings at 5:30. Open mic night, held quarterly, is open to all writers and listeners. A donation of $5 at the door would be gratefully accepted.

 

 

Off-Center Fest Steps Into the Spotlight

The Segerstrom Center’s annual Off Center Festival begins Saturday, Jan. 16, with free party on the plaza. All tickets are $25 for remaining shows through Jan. 30 and are now on sale.

The all-new line-up of contemporary and sometimes controversial artists includes Manual Cinema’s ADA/AVA, Dorothée Munyaneza’s Samedi Détente, Kid Koala’s Nufonia Must Fall, Toshi Reagon and BIGLovely in Sacred Music for Sacred Times, Sarah Jones’ Sell/Buy/Date and the Martha Redbone Roots Project.

Two free events, Jan. 16 and 23, will feature two LA-based bands, Allah-Las and Milo Greene. The party starts at 6 p.m. and will offer live music, dancing and food truck cuisine on the plaza in Costa Mesa.

 

Battle of the Mariachis Tickets on Sale Now

The 12th annual Battle of the Mariachis Festival will be held from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, at Mission San Juan Capistrano. Mariachi groups from across Southern California will compete before a panel of judges.

Festival highlights include ringing of the mission bells, performances by Ballet Folklorico de San Juan Capistrano and trick ropers, a marionette show and food vendors.
