Breakers Run Over Webb 55-7
“Old school” football returned to Guyer Field as Laguna needed little dazzle to roll over out-manned Webb School (1-1) of Claremont last Friday at home. Laguna starters scored quickly and often.
The contest opened with Robbie McInerny kicking his first of a record seven touchbacks to put Webb on their own 20 yard-line. The Gauls fumbled on their second scrimmage play to give Laguna the ball on the 28 yardline. After a five-yard run by Drake Martinez, Robert Clemons III showed his speed darting 23 yards for the first tally. McInerny’s kick was just wide. The Gauls went three plays and out without a yard gained punting the ball to Laguna’s 38 yard line. Norton Penney ran nine yards before Drake Martinez raced 53-yards for the second score with less than four minutes into the game. The third touchdown came on a three-play, 65-yard drive and the fourth on a two-play drive. After that, the Breakers started to substitute freely, using nine different runners. Sophomore runner Nathan Lancaster ended up with the most yards and carries including a one-play 80-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Laguna easily broke the school rushing record set in 2009 and smashed the 55-year old total offense record set in 1956. McInerny tied the single game extra-point mark and now shares the record with Austin Paxson (2010), John Snedegar (2008), Damon Berryhill (1980) and Leslie Weldon (1977). Laguna’s kicking game should give the Breakers additional options this season.
