More than 30 girls tried out for Laguna Beach High’s newest varsity sport: beach volleyball. Raul Papaleo, who also coaches of the girls’ varsity indoor team, ran hitting drills and two-on-two mini scrimmages at Main Beach this past Monday to gauge the level of talent.

After at least one more tryout, Papaleo will pick a roster of 12 girls to compete for Laguna in the AAU-sanctioned Interscholastic Beach Volleyball League, which began with eight schools in 2012 and then expanded to 30 schools with two conferences and six divisions in 2013. Laguna will likely join the Orange division of the Southern conference.

Three pairs of doubles teams form a school varsity squad. Each school competes against another school’s pairs of three teams, in order of rank, to determine the dual match winners. Matches will be played on Saturdays, with the season beginning in mid-March and concluding with a post-season tournament in mid-May.

The boys’ IBVL plays in the fall.
