Football2-8, 0-5
Following a familiar script, the out-manned Breakers dropped their fifth straight league contest 31-17 last Friday night with Godinez in a contest played at Segerstrom High School. Laguna finished league play winless on the field for the first time since 1999.
Breakers took the opening kickoff and moved the ball 26 yards in eight plays before turning the ball over on downs near midfield. The Grizzlies took five runs to score their first touchdown and easily scored again on their next two possessions.
Down 34-0 in the third quarter, Laguna scored on a seven play drive led by a big 43 yard run by Matt Hayes. Breakers got the ball back after Godinez was charged with a safety after an intentional grounding call on an end-zone pass play. The hosts had fumbled the snap creating the desperation toss to avoid a sack. Laguna’s last score came midway in the final period when Curtis Harrison took over Jack Simon after Simon took a rough tackle on a run for a first down. The sophomore completed a 14-yard pass to Matt Hayes and scored the touchdown on a 1-yard run. He followed this up with a nice toss to George Cracknall for the two-point conversion.
Jack Simon returned for the final drive but the Breakers were unable to advance into Godinez territory. The gifted senior ended his career as only the third player to go over 4,000 in total offense in 81 seasons of varsity football play.
