Slow Down and Save Lives

Editor,

In response to the letter to the editor on Nov 21, “Should All Pay the Price for a Private School’s Needs.” First and foremost, absolutely, yes! We are talking about the price of a life here. So keeping students or any pedestrian safe by installing a stop light crossing is worth the few minutes stop to allow a safe crossing.   Anyone in Laguna who has used a crosswalk on Coast Highway, Glenneyre Street or Laguna Canyon Road knows that drivers drive faster than the posted speed limit and very few people stop on these busy streets when you try to cross in a un-controlled crosswalk.

If you are on Laguna Canyon Road in the morning and get behind a school bus that makes several stops with red lights flashing to allow students to board the bus, it is no different and by the way is longer to stop than the cross walk in question. I travel Laguna Canyon Road almost every day and have had to stop for the red light crosswalk and the school buses in the morning. Big deal. Maybe it takes me another three to four minutes.

The whole reason there is a cross walk here is to save lives. As we know, a student lost their life at this cross walk. Come on, is having to wait two minutes such an inconvenience or such a “Big Price to Pay”?  I’m sure Nina’s mother, or friends would be willing to give their opinion on this too.
