The South Coast Regency Theater will screen an unusual surf film Thursday, Aug. 14. “Beyond Sight, The Derek Rabelo Story” chronicles the three-year journey of Rabelo, born blind in Guarapari, Brazil, who endures grueling mental, physical and spiritual training to achieve his dream of surfing the Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu. Along the way he inspires pro-surfers including Kelly Slater, Damien Hobgood, Rob Machado, Lakey Peterson, Taj Burrow, and Laird Hamilton who are featured in the film.

The film will screen at 5 and 7:30 p.m. at the South Coast Regency Theater, 162 S. Coast Highway. Tickets, $8, are available at the church website: reliantchurchlaguna.com.

The screening is sponsored by Reliant Church Laguna, which is led by Pastor Jason Huffman. The year-old church’s congregants are itinerant, meeting outside at Thurston Middle School, at an art studio, or community center or private homes. Currently, the church of about 20 members meets at Top of the World Elementary School on Sundays at 10:30 a.m.

Huffman lives with his wife and children in Aliso Viejo and teaches at the Calvary Chapel High School in Costa Mesa. A former Huntington Beach lifeguard and water polo player, he says he established a church in Laguna because the community called to him.  In addition to surfing in Laguna, Huffman said has worked with the city’s homeless population as well.
