Surf Team Rides Against Newport Harbor

The high school surf team’s season began at Thalia Street Beach last week with new and returning surfers.

Freshmen Jeremy Shutts put in a top-notch performance to secure a second in shortboard, while Willy Hogan came in fourth. A welcome addition to the team, newcomer Noah North, who relocated from Australia, placed second in his heat.

Giving Laguna the overall win in girls longboard was freshman Megan Mathews taking second, Cayla Henderson third, and Kira Hamilton in fourth.

Freshman, Hunter Johnson came up third and Jack Dickerson finished fourth in bodyboard.

Newcomers Jakob Herbert, a recent addition from Kauai, and freshman Jake Levin, ran away with the next shortboard heat taking first and second, while Colton Bryant finished third, giving the team a rare clean sweep.

Grace Wellsfry placed third and Coco Putnum fourth in the girls shortboard category.

Alec Karas finished third in boys’ longboard.

Dylan Davis placed first and a healthy Dante Madrigal finished third in boys’ shortboard.

The final score: Laguna Beach 81, Newport Harbor 87.

The team next faces San Clemente on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at T-Street.
