Tillman Segal, known by some as the t-shirt king of Laguna Beach, has promoted the town’s brand with souvenir merchandise for over 35 years.

Former employees, business associates and friends plan to help Segal, 77, celebrate his legacy with a “surprise” party at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, organized by his daughter Lauren Segal, who helps manage the family business.

Segal, a mentor to many former employees, who now works as a professional artist, generally paints from noon to 3 p.m. in the shop, 387 S. Coast Highway. The party will relocate to Tortilla Republic from 3 to 6 p.m. for refreshments, reminiscing and brief tribute presentation, says Lauren Segal.

The younger Segal has updated the store by providing an outlet for local artists entrepreneurs and non-profits to sell their products and share their causes with the customers. She also founded the non-profit Give a Beat, which uses music to raise awareness about social and economic inequality and recently was honored by the My Hero Project.
