A teenager fled to the safety of a neighbor’s house after encountering a burglar in her own home in the 800 block of S. Coast Highway about 6:27 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, police said.

One or more thieves apparently kicked in the locked front door while she was showering, Sgt. Louise Callus said. Police did not locate the suspects, she said.

The daughter of the property owners, who were out of town, heard footsteps overhead as she dressed. She apparently caught a glimpse of one suspect as she exited her bedroom and fled the house with a cell phone.

The suspect was described as a male black, 20-30 years old, 6’ tall and 180 pounds, with dreadlocks below his shoulders, and wearing a hooded sweatshirt and black pants, Callus said.

While searching the area, police discovered a miter abandoned at the Thalia Street Beach access, possibly taken from a construction at 881 S. Coast Highway, near the home break-in.
