McCarthyism and Teen Angst Converge in Debut Novel

Ellen Ruderman, author of “Chasing the Red Car,” will be reading from her book, answer questions, and sign copies at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 10, at Laguna Beach Books, 1200 S. Coast Highway.

Kim Lebow, Ruderman’s protagonist in “Chasing the Red Car,” is transplanted from the Bronx to the San Fernando Valley of 1947 and experiences an emotionally unpredictable home life as well as McCarthy era communist witch hunts that threaten her father and reach into her high school.

Ruderman’s debut novel draws parallels between the political repression of the 1950s and the abuses of executive power after 9/11.

A practicing psychotherapist and psychoanalyst in Encino, Ruderman is a mental health consultant, educator and author.
