Thurston Middle School and Laguna Beach High School are two of the 218 public middle and high schools that were named California Distinguished Schools for 2013, school officials reported.
The schools earned the honor for their strong commitment and innovative approaches to improving student academic achievement, a statement says.
“We are pleased and proud to receive this recognition of the hard work, commitment, and leadership demonstrated by these schools,” said Supt. Sherine Smith, noting contributions by parents, PTAs and support group SchoolPower.
“Designation as a California Distinguished School is indeed an honor and one that is reserved for truly exemplary schools with highly effective educational programs,” said Asst. Supt. of Instructional Services Deni Christensen.
Distinguished Schools will be honored during a regional award ceremony next month.
