A tsunami swell generated by an 8.2 earthquake in Chile was forecast to arrive in Southern California in the pre-dawn darkness about 4:45 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, and Laguna Beach police sent out a message urging people to stay out of the water for several hours thereafter.

Significant coastal flooding is not expected, but the Tsunami Warning Center says the swell is capable of producing strong currents and stronger than normal tidal surges.

Police warned that “the first wave is usually not the strongest,” predicting that the region will experience successive swells for several hours.

The advisory affects miles of California coastline, from San Onofre State Beach to San Luis Obispo.

The center says currents may be hazardous to swimmers, boats and coastal structures and may continue for several hours after the arrival of the initial wave.

If you are in an advisory area, move off the beach and out of harbors and marinas, the center advises.
