South Coast Water District General Manager Mike Dunbar announced his retirement effective Friday, Oct. 12 at a special board meeting where Betty Burnett was appointed interim general manager.

A licensed engineer, Dunbar leaves South Coast Water District after 25 years, starting as district engineer and rising to general manager in 1992.

Under Dunbar’s leadership, the District has developed local groundwater supplies, been the lead local agency on the South Orange Coastal Ocean Desalination Project, been a pioneer in the use of recycled water and spearheaded the rehabilitation of a two-mile tunnel.

“I am leaving the District in good hands,” he said.

The water board will initiate a search for a permanent successor.
