Weekend Trolleys Omit North Laguna

Editor,

It seemed as though the city of Laguna Beach was finally getting the trolley system figured out. Between the weekend trolley runs starting last March to help lessen local traffic and parking issues, to the improved trolley routes this summer, I was hearing a lot of praise within my friends and neighbors in Laguna Beach. It was not perfect, but these were all steps in the right direction.

Now that the summer trolley schedule has ended and weekend routes have resumed, what happened to the North Laguna stop? It used to be located on the corner of Coast Highway and Cliff, which already was a bit of a hike for those of us living in North Laguna. But I was happy to make the trek because the city of Laguna Beach was making the effort, and I wanted the weekend trolley to be a success.

But now our closest stop is practically at Shaw’s Cove! Don’t the residents of North Laguna pay as much in property tax as the rest of the town? Don’t we contribute as much to our local businesses and restaurants? It’s not fair that suddenly we are left out of the trolley system that we are helping to fund.

I urge all North Laguna residents that feel the same to send an email to our city council. If they truly want to help control traffic and parking on the weekends, put together a trolley route that works, not just a tourist attraction that looks good on paper.

  1. As long as the ridership from that area of Laguna supports the route I am all for it. Many, many people pay taxes in Laguna that do not have trolly access. We could run trolleys from Alta Laguna if the ridership numbers were there but I suspect they are not. Its a numbers game.
