Retired real estate broker William “Bill” Powell passed away peacefully on July 3, 2014, in his hometown of Shreveport, La.

Powell was born Aug. 23, 1929, in Shreveport and lived there until he attended Loyola University in New Orleans. After college, Powell proudly served in the US Coast Guard before moving to Bakersfield, Calif., to manage a local restaurant.

In 1964 he moved to Laguna Beach and changed careers to real estate.

Powell was the owner-broker of William Powell Real Estate located on Glenneyre Street and was a member of the Laguna Board of Realtors for more than 45 years. He was also active over the years with Laguna Playhouse, the former South Coast Medical Center and a member of St. Catherine’s church, serving as an usher for more than 45 years at the Saturday 5:30 p.m. mass.

Powell was a dancer at the Laguna Playhouse and played the lead in “Anything Goes” in the late ‘60s. His love for dance led to his becoming an ambassador host with Crystal Cruise Lines. Because of his real estate business, he could only get away a few times a year, so he only chose exotic destinations around the world.

Powell was the ultimate gentleman real estate broker and was often seen driving around town in his white Tiffany car.

He is survived by his siblings, C. David Powell, Joyce M. Hays, Robert Powell, John Powell; several nieces and nephews; his aunt, Alice Cox; and of course his many friends here in Laguna Beach.
