Boys Basketball

Breakers opened their 78th varsity season with a fifth place finish in the 24-team Godinez tournament last week. Laguna started a little disheveled as Brandon Lewis hit a three-point shot with less than a second left to give Laguna a 51-50 victory over Western  in a contest played at Loara High School on Nov. 29.

 

The following night, the Breakers easily defeated Santa Ana 56-41 at Loara High as Lewis was hot again, hitting five three-point shots. On Dec. 1 at Godinez, Breakers dropped a 54-52 game to El Dorado. Jake Dalke scored 16 points and Cole Kesler added 13 in the effort. Dalke scored 22 the next night as Laguna surprised Brethren Christian 60-51 despite their talented transfer Mamadou Ndiaye scoring 27 for the Warriors. Breakers closed out tournament play with a 64-47 thrashing of North Torrance as Lewis scored six three-point shots on his way to 27 points in the winning effort played last Saturday at Godinez.

 

This past Tuesday, Laguna (4-2) dropped a 49-45 game to Dana Hills (3-2) at the Dolphin’s gym. Jake Dalke had 12 points to lead the Breakers, Cole Kesler added 11. Derek Reigel saw his first action since returning from football. Next week, Laguna plays in the Westminster Tournament with El Segundo the first opponent on Dec. 12.  Breakers will play in the North South Challenge at El Toro High on Dec. 21 facing La Habra in the all-day basketball event.

 

Looking ahead, Breaker’s biggest challenge to capturing their sixth straight title will take place in the opening league contest on Wednesday, Jan. 11 when the Breakers host Estancia.

 

Girls Basketball

The season opened this week for the girl’s squad led by new coach, Mark Lewis. Breakers lost four starters from last year’s squad and could struggle this season.

 

Girls Soccer

Bill Rolfing’s seventh season as the girls coach opened last week with a 4-1 loss to Tesoro on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Guyer Field. With the school’s only field occupied due to an extended football season, there are limited practice options for the winter soccer programs.  Breakers opened the Ocean View tournament with a 1-1 tie with a Huntington Beach split squad on Dec. 2. Marina Paul had the score with an assist by Amy Hewlett. Laguna lost to Tustin 3-0 in tournament play on Dec. 3.

 

Girls Water Polo

Breakers opened their 15th season with a 14-10 win over ninth-ranked El Toro on Nov. 30 at the loser’s pool. Yoshi Andersen’s six goals led Laguna as new keeper Daniela Lucidi recorded seven saves and three steals. Breakers were No. 1 last season in the county and opened this season at No. 3. Laguna has won at least 20 matches in each of the past 11 seasons.
