Boys Basketball (7-9)
Breakers open their Orange Coast League title defense on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 7 p.m. at Dugger Gym against Estancia Eagles (8-7), their biggest threat to a sixth consecutive crown. Breakers have the series edge on all conference opponents except Estancia, which leads the all-time series 32-20 despite the 10-2 Breaker advantage during the OCL era.
Last week Laguna finished fourth at the Estancia Coast Classic defeating Marina 57-50 in the opening game last Tuesday, Dec. 27 and Corona 59-52 the following day. Laguna lost to Mission Viejo 72-49 in the semifinals and 71-65 to Sunny Hills for third.
Laguna is led by junior Jake Dalke, a two-time first team all-league selection who is averaging 15.3 points per game in scoring. Senior Brandon Lewis is scoring at a 12.9 clip while Cole Kesler is averaging 11.7 points per game. Derek Reigel is back from the extended football season and is quickly getting to his all-league form. Lewis has already hit 49 three-point shots this season and should finish 2012 among the top long-range shooters in school history.
Girls Basketball (0-6)
The program has young players after the departure of last year’s talented seniors and could be challenged to win a league game this season. Godinez is the favorite but the remaining league spots are wide open. Laguna opens league play on Tuesday at home with Estancia.
Girls Soccer (3-6-2)
Bill Rolfing’s squad tuned up for the league season with a successful 2-0-1 trip to the desert last week.
Breakers opened with a 2-1 victory over Xavier Prep on Tuesday, Dec. 27 as Marina Paul scored twice in the win. Breakers tied Indio on Wednesday, Dec. 28 as Paul scored for Laguna on a penalty shot. Rolfing singled out Amy and Sarah Hewlett on defense along with midfield play from April Carlson, Hanna Magstadt, and Caroline Cannan in the effort. Laguna concluded their trip with a 5-0 rout of Coachella Valley on Thursday with Paul scoring twice. Also scoring were Audrey Pillsbury, April Carlson and Janie Crawford. This past Monday, Laguna tied their Alumni 2-2 in the annual match at Guyer Field.
Girls Water Polo (8-1)
Breakers look like a contender for a run in the D-I playoffs this season with a fifth place finish last week at the Newport Harbor Holiday Cup. Breakers opened play last Friday with a 22-2 blasting of Poway but suffered a tough 4-3 loss to Santa Barbara in the night cap as the Dons held the Breakers scoreless in the second half. On Saturday, Yoshi Anderson scored six goals in Laguna’s 13-7 win over Edison and four goals in Laguna’s comeback victory over Dos Pueblos to conclude tournament play. Laguna faced Los Osos (D-IV # 2) this past Wednesday and Coronado tomorrow. Laguna will travel to Santa Barbara next week for their annual non-league match at Dos Pueblos on Thursday along with the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13 and 14.
