Woman’s Club Steps Up to Provide Back-To-School Supplies

The newly formed Woman’s Club Charitable Fund, headed by board member Ellie Ortiz, has purchased 125 backpacks and filled them with school supplies for local public school students in need.

The purpose of the charitable fund is to fill a gap in the community and assist Laguna Beach families where other organizations are not able.

Business Club Hosts the Chief of Police

The Laguna Beach Business Club will host Police Chief Laura Farinella as guest speaker at their Thursday, Sept. 17 breakfast meeting, 7:30 a.m. in the Hotel Laguna, 425 S. Coast Highway.

TED Comes to the Susi Q   

A discussion group centered on TED talks has been organized at the Susi Q Senior Center, 380 Third St. and invites new members to join.

Facilitated by former systems engineer, Al Gumb, the group meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. to watch a video about technology, entertainment or design from the TED library. A discussion follows.

Shelter’s Friends Provide Dental Care

The Laguna Beach dental office of Dr. Elli Abtahi along with colleagues provided extractions, partial and full dentures restorative work and general hygiene to Friendship Shelter residents on Friday, Aug. 21.

Others involved included endodontist Dr. Dan Boehne, oral surgeon Dr. Mary Delsol and periodontists Dr. Alice Moran and Dr. Clark Wright, plus hygienists Staci Billy and Michelle Vega and assistants Dee Dee Price, Carrie Kuran and Olivia Cassette.

The day of beneficent dental care came together after months of planning and organization and included help from Welldent dental lab in San Clemente, which rushed cases back to the dental health care providers.

Since 2009, Dr. Abtahi’s office has provided pro bono care for Friendship Shelter residents and Dr. Boehne of Dana Point has stepped in for emergency root canals.

 

Five Teams Prepare for Disasters

Laguna Beach’s Community Emergency Response Team joins teams from four other cities for disaster preparedness exercise on Saturday, Sept. 12 at San Juan Capistrano’s San Juan Mobile Estates.

A mock earthquake will enable CERT members to practice disaster response skills with simulated injured people and animals, damaged residences, small fires and gas leaks. Local residents and organizations are joining in to assist, including San Juan Mobile Estates and local Boy Scouts who will act as mock victims.

A Forum to Raise Spiritual Questions

If you have ever had questions about something you’ve heard in church or read in the Bible, a six-week class, starting Sunday, Sept. 20, at Laguna Beach United Methodist Church should provide some answers.

Members of the community are welcome at 11:30 a.m. for “Living the Questions,” which will be led by Meg Estrada and Jay Sowell in the Upper Conference Room at the church, 21632 Wesley Dr.

Unitarians Welcome Newcomers

Perhaps you are one of the many who feel like you are “spiritual but not religious.” Wherever you are on your life’s journey, the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Laguna Beach welcomes you.

Its “Coming Home!” service Sunday, Sept. 13, celebrates in song and story an inclusive spirit with minister Rev. Lee Marie Sanchez, returning after 10 years.

Give a Bike, Change a Life

Troy Lee Designs in Laguna Beach will host a Wheels 4 Life event on Friday, Sept. 19 from 6-10 p.m. at 380 Glenneyre St.

City Hosts Business Workshop

Planning Commissioners Anne Johnson and Susan Whitin, representatives from the Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce and Ann Larson, assistant director of community development, will give pointers on opening a business in Laguna Beach at a 6:30-8:30 p.m. workshop Thursday, Sept. 17 at the community center, 380 Third St.

Cops Aim to Curb Cycle Crashes

Extra police officers will be on duty patrolling areas where motorcycle crashes commonly occur on Saturday, Sept. 12, looking for violations such as speeding, unsafe turning and impairment due to alcohol and drugs by both riders and drivers.

Over the last three years, motorcycle involved collisions have resulted in two fatal and 36 injury crashes in the city, police said in a statement.

 

Take Part in National Preparedness Month

Laguna Beach residents can do their part to prepare for emergencies by registering cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses for AlertOC. The county’s mass notification system sends alerts of action as needed, such as an evacuation.

On Thursday, Sept. 24, more than 2 million residents will receive a call to test AlertOC. The drill will replicate a regional emergency.
