Bag pipes played and bells tolled in Laguna Beach this past Sunday, Sept. 11, marking the 15th anniversary of terrorist attacks on U.S. soil. Fire commander Api Weinert, above, spoke along with others, including Karen Curreri, of Newport Beach. Her son, Joseph, a USC student and swim team captain, enlisted after the attack and was killed in 2007 in his first deployment, she said. Such a loss, she said, “makes you more grateful for every blessing.”
