Laguna Beach High School’s football team is heading to the weight room after concluding its spring workouts. Summer practices begin July 5. Veteran coach and Athletic Director Mike Churchill, who took over for Jonathon Todd this season, said “I can’t wait to get the pads on.”
A lack of bodies has always hampered the Breakers, but not this year. Churchill said he has more than 80 kids ready to hit the gridiron for the various Breaker football programs. As many as 50 may be on the sidelines for the varsity squad when they open play Friday, Sept. 9, against Webb High School on Guyer Field.
It seems as if there have always been a lot of kids who want to play football, but no one ever asked them, according to Churchill, who spent the last several months actively recruiting for his first season as head coach.
Churchill injects a wealth of experience and new energy into a program that has struggled to compete in the Orange Coast league. The departure of QB Austin Paxson and wide receiver Chris Paul and a lack of size on the offensive line have Churchill leaning toward a run-first ball control offensive scheme.
Churchill’s new staff includes Bill Douglass, Spencer Harrell, Joe Laffey, Corey Brown and Mike Colucci.
