Hector Villagra, appointed to follow in the footsteps of Ramona Ripston leading the ACLU of Southern California, will speak about freedom of religion and beliefs at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, April 3 at the Unitarian Univeralist Fellowship of Laguna Beach.
Villagra previously served as director of the ACLU’s Orange County office, which sued Laguna Beach over citing people for sleeping in public places when they had no where else to go. The office has also pursued cases involving religious freedom, including one involving a Buddhist temple and two others for Muslim plaintiffs.
After services, the fellowship, located at 429 Cypress, continues their practice of “Sandwich Sunday,” which gives attendees the opportunity to become better acquainted with their speaker in a question and answer period. The $5 charge for lunch is used to provide meals for those staying at the Alternative Sleeping Location, established in the wake of the ACLU settlement.
