James Verbicky’s process of collaging vintage print media with resins and dyes results in panels that burst with color and pattern. New York-based artist Robert Mars appropriates images from popular culture.

Elevating the commonplace into fine art, Verbicky and Mars both celebrate and critique mass culture in an exhibit at Joanne Artman Gallery, 326 N. Coast Highway, that closes Oct. 31.

Artist Eye Gallery hosts a reception for artist Cansu Bulgu from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, 1294 S. Coast Highway.

Bulgu creates large scale drawings with sand, photography and digital light painting. The exhibit runs through Nov. 30.

 

 

 

Calling All Artists

The city’s Arts Commission is accepting applications for the annual holiday palette competition and an artist designed bench for Heisler Park near Monument Point.

Bench artists are invited to submit images of previous installations and their public art resume. The honorarium is $20,000 and the deadline for submissions is Oct. 5. Guidelines and application are available at: lagunabeachcity.slideroom.com/#/Login.

Artists Open Studios to the Public

The public is invited to an Artist Open Studios exhibition at City Hall, which runs through Oct. 9 and can be viewed weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Artist Open Studios tours will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 17 and 18. Board a free shuttle from the ACT V parking lot, 1900 Laguna Canyon Road, to 30 studios to see artists working in a variety of media.

Learn to Shoot Photos Using Tablets or Phones

Seniors aged 50 and older are invited to learn photography at the Susi Q Center, 380 Third St.

The two-part workshop is Wednesdays Oct. 7 and 14, 1 p.m.-4p.m. and the cost is $30

Participants will learn how to shoot photos using iPhones, iPads, or mobile phones as taught by Mary Gulino through Laguna Outreach for Community Arts (LOCA).

Topics will include device functions, lighting, stability, editing apps, collaging and creating

postcards for emailing.
