Sixty-five fitness buffs took off from Aliso CrossFit in Aliso Viejo on a recent Saturday, each with 20 pounds of non-perishable food in their backpacks, for the Laguna Food Pantry. Aliso CrossFit organized the food drive as part of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month.

At the end of the five-mile hike through Aliso and Wood Canyon, pantry volunteers greeted the group with water, snacks, balloons, flowers, and the musical theme from the film “Rocky” blaring. After unloading the 1,100 pounds of food, volunteers drove the hikers back to their starting point.

“This year’s Hike for Hunger brought out 20 more hikers than last year’s inaugural event. We had such an enthusiastic response, we are considering making it a twice-yearly event,” said Rick DiCarlo who owns Aliso CrossFit with his wife Chelsea.

New volunteers are always welcome at the Food Pantry on 20652 Laguna Canyon Rd. Phone: 949-497-7121, lagunafoodpantry.org.
