Author Pulls Family’s Exile Into a Novel’s Backstory

Aline Ohanesian, of San Juan Capistrano, remembers her Armenian great-grandmother telling the story of their family’s dramatic exile from Turkey during the Armenian genocide.

Using her own family history as a starting point, the author has written “Orhan’s Inheritance,” a novel full of love and heartbreak, war and recovery, crimes and their reparations. She will be at Laguna Beach Books, 1200 S. Coast Highway, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, to discuss and sign her book, whose release coincides with the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide.

The novel was selected by Barnes & Noble’s Discover Great New Voices program.

Author Relies on Familiar Locales In New Book

In the book, Hannegan shares her intimate journey of heartbreak and happiness when she buys a mountain bike and learns to ride the trails of Aliso and Woods Canyon Wilderness Park.

Book, Film Spotlight Chile’s Patagonia

“The Fisherman’s Son,” a book and film about Patagonia surf ambassador Ramón Navarro stops Friday, April 10, at Hobie Surf Shop in Dana Point.

Navarro will be at the shop sharing the movie, his personal story, and answering questions about protecting this fragile environment home to Punta de Lobos, one of the world’s best left point breaks.

Preserving the livelihood of multi-generational fishing families like the Navarros means safeguarding Chile’s coastline.

Poets Invited to Enter Annual Contest

The Laguna Library’s 17th annual poetry contest, open to the public, in honor of National Poetry Month, will be accepting submissions throughout April.

This year’s topic is, “Winds of Change.” Entrants may submit up to three original poems by April 30. Name, age and contact information is required. Poems cannot be returned.

Gift certificates for Laguna Beach Books will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in seven categories.

A public reading by the winners is planned for Saturday, June 6. Winning poems will be published in the 17th Annual Poetry Booklet.

Local Poet-Scholar Steps into the Limelight

The author, liberal arts and art history chair at Laguna College of Art and Design, will read and sign his work at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 18.
