The Laguna Concert Band performs on the Laguna Playhouse stage Sunday, Oct. 30, in a 3 p.m. concert with a special twist appropriate for all Hallows Eve.

Multi-instrumentalist Gary Gould will show off his skill at theremin, which emits an eerie sound popularized in soundtracks such as “Spellbound”, “The Lost Weekend”, and “The Day The Earth Stood Still”. One of the earliest electronic instruments, a theremin is rarely heard in a concert format and was invented by Russian inventor Leon Theremin in 1928.

The Theremin is unique among musical instruments in that it is played without physical contact. Gould’s arrangement of the song, “Transylvanian Lullaby” is based on the theme from the movie “Young Frankenstein” and will be a rare treat for concert goers to hear this most uncommon instrument.

Also returning as a guest artist is Charlie Warren on tuba, who will be featured with Gould on clarinet, doing a “Spooky Duo”. Additionally, the Laguna Concert Band’s own Linda Hughes will perform with the concert band with special arrangements of “The Man I Love” and “Come Rain or Come Shine.”

The lively programming will maintain the LCB tradition of combining fun with serious works such as Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition”, Vaughan Williams’ “Folk Song Suite”, John Williams’ ” The Cowboys” as well as selections from Williams’ “Harry Potter Symphonic Suite”. They are certain to build a bit of gravitas into the evening.

Those familiar with the LCB concert series know of the 18-piece SwingSet, which will also be featured at the Spooktacular. SwingSet will be swingin’ before intermission with “Witchcraft”, “How High the Moon”, “Autumn Leaves” and “Paper Moon” featuring local favorite, vocalist Ginger Hatfield.

MC Lona Ingwerson will run the show.

Reserved seats of $10 are available now through Playhouse box office, 949-497-ARTS (2787) or see information on the LCB Website at www.lagunaconcertband.com.
