Laguna’s Newport Elks tournament run ended with two losses last week as the Breakers dropped a 10-6 contest to St. Paul on Wednesday, March 8, at Skipper Carrillo Field. The Swordsman used a five-run third inning outburst to control the game and Laguna squandered a number of scoring opportunities, stranding nine players. On Friday, March 10, at Tesoro, Laguna lost a 1-0 pitcher’s duel with Jack Loechner taking the loss on an unearned run giving up only two hits. Breakers had six hits, stranding five baserunners. Laguna finished with a 1-4 tournament record in the 16-team Foothill Division. Roosevelt (Corona) defeated CdM for the title.
This week Laguna hosts Calvary Chapel (2-5) on Friday, March 17, in the league opener and the following day will play Loara (2-6) in a non-league doubleheader at Anaheim’s Glover Field.
