Laguna swept their league games last week to finish the first round of league play 5-0, but lost three subsequent tournament games this past week.
On Tuesday, March 28, the Breakers hit a school record 13 doubles, hammered a total of 24 hits to rout Saddleback 26-2 in a five-inning mercy rule contest played at Skipper Carrillo Field. The total tied the Southern Section record set in 1996 and broke Laguna’s Orange County record set in 2011. Jack Loechner picked up the victory.
Breakers came back on Friday, March 31, as Blake Burzell tossed a two-hit, 10-strikeout shutout of Estancia (8-6, 4-1) at the Eagles’ field. Two runs in the fourth inning provided the only scoring in the game. Cutter Clawson hit to drive in Grady Morgan and Kolton Freeman.
Last Saturday, April 1, Valencia’s three-run first inning paved the way to 5-1 victory over the Breakers. Lance Stewart took the loss.
This week the Breakers are in the Ryan Lemmon tournament at Windrow Park in Irvine. On Monday, April 3, Tustin scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Laguna 6-5. The following day, April 4, Loechner threw a four hitter, striking out eight, but three costly errors handed Yorba Linda the 4-3 victory.
Next week Laguna will start the second round of league play with a pair of games with Saddleback.
