This recognition grants Jeppson membership to the Laurel Society, a group founded by Soroptimist International of the Americas to recognize outstanding women and girls.

Jeppson has donated time and effort towards coordinating events, representing SILB at regional and district meetings and chairing the membership committee.

Jeppson is also involved in the Laguna Beach Woman’s Club and the Pageant of the Masters.

“Helping women and girls is the theme of SILB. That is my passion. The women in my family have traditionally been supportive of women’s organizations that lend a helping hand to other women in need,” said Jeppson.

Jan’s Health Bar, purveyor of sandwiches, salads and smoothies, opens for business today, Friday, July 8, at 610 N. Coast Highway, with free samples and other give-aways throughout the day.

As a teen, Poppy Holguin began working at the original store founded in the back of a Huntington Beach surf shop 43 years ago. She purchased the local icon when the owner retired and the Huntington Beach resident has since expanded to Costa Mesa and now Laguna, says spokeswoman Morgan Souders.

Infected Mosquitoes on the March

Since West Nile virus was first detected in the county in May, infected mosquito samples have also been detected in Anaheim, Irvine, La Habra, La Palma, Orange, and Seal Beach, indicating a more severe problem than in previous years, according to vector control officials.

Without major rainstorms, storm drains, flood channels and other water systems have become full of debris, impeding water flow and creating fertile mosquito breeding habitats, says a statement.

To combat the problem, the Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District recommend eliminating any standing water around your home and ensure all window and door screens in your house are in good repair.

To report dead birds or neglected pools of water, call 714 971-2421.

To celebrate its 125th anniversary, the Daughters of the American Revolution two years ago set out to achieve a Guinness world record by collecting and mailing at least 10,000 letters to active-duty service members. Members of the DAR’s Patience Wright Chapter in Laguna Beach contributed by collecting 35 letters to add to the total, including some letter from local schoolchildren.

The carefully tallied total of 100,904 letters, more than 10 times the minimum threshold, was revealed Saturday. “Congratulations—you are officially amazing!” the adjudicator proclaimed.

Protect Nests, Promote Healthy Trees

A city guide assists residents, tree trimmers and contractors with information about the potential impact of trimming trees Feb. 1 to Aug. 31 during nesting season.

Before trimming trees and bushes, always check for active nests, says a city statement. Hire a certified arborist to determine if and when it is safe to trim to avoid destroying nest sites or introduce pests that harm the health of trees, says the statement.

The guide is available on the city’s website and its community development department.
