The athletic directors of the eight-school Sunset League met last week to formulate a plan for the new sports league for 2018-19, and 2019-2020, according to a league handout. The final format will be approved by the leagues’ principals and athletic directors.

The fall 2018 season appears to be as follows: Sunset League will have two four-team divisions based on ratings; Surf will be the higher division, Wave the lower division. Some sports will require a single non-league crossover game with the other division to help in completing a season schedule.

Laguna’s fall assignments are:

Boys Water Polo: Surf; Corona del Mar, Huntington Beach, Newport Harbor, Laguna.

Boys Cross Country: Wave; Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach, Marina, Laguna.

Girls Cross Country: Wave; Edison, Huntington Beach, Newport Harbor, Laguna.

Girls Tennis: Wave; Edison, Huntington Beach, Marina, Laguna.

Girls Volleyball: Wave; Fountain Valley, Marina, Newport Harbor, Laguna.

Girls Golf: Wave; Edison, Marina, Newport Harbor, Laguna.

Football will be a member of the Golden West League with Marina joining Laguna for this sport. The league will be split into two yet to be announced divisions. The other Golden West schools are Segerstrom, Westminster, Ocean View, Godinez, Western, and Garden Grove. All are considerably larger schools than Laguna.

The remaining Sunset League football schools are Corona Del Mar, Newport Harbor, Fountain Valley, Los Alamitos, Huntington Beach, and Edison.

The Sunset League is the second oldest all-Orange County league formed in 1936 for the larger county high schools.

The team sports will play six league games. Cross-country will run a cluster meet and a league meet held together with both divisions. Breakers, with an enrollment of just over 1,000, will be competing against schools that average 2700 students in size. Southern Section CIF playoffs for cross-country will still be by enrollment while golf is geographic, and water polo, tennis, and volleyball by individual school rating.

To be guaranteed to advance to the playoffs, a team must finish first or second in league play. Only the golf league champion is guaranteed post-season play in that sport.
