Coach Ethan Damato made a conscious decision to let everyone play in the State CIF Regional Final, and Orange Lutheran took advantage of Laguna’s reserves to rally from a 5-4 deficit in the third period and defeat Laguna 11-8 last Saturday evening in the State CIF D1 Regional Final at Segerstrom High School. The Lancers exploited the Laguna subs in a brief two-minute period in the third quarter to score three quick goals, including two power plays, to take a lead they never relinquished. Seventeen Laguna players saw action in the final game of the season. Breakers ended the year 31-2, tying the school record for season victories with the 2009, 2015 and 2017 teams.

The Breakers opened the tournament on Friday, Feb. 22, with a 10-4 win over San Clemente, extending their all-time series advantage to 15-1. Tea Poljak scored three goals, while Nicole Struss added a 5-meter score, two assists and three steals. Saturday afternoon, Quinn Winter was stellar in the cage with 12 saves as Laguna held off Foothill 8-7 in the semifinal game. Molly Renner led the way with three goals, while Poljak added two scores. Laguna led 6-3 going into the final period, but Foothill battled to make it a game and had an opportunity for a last shot, but the Breaker defense made their try an easy save for Winter. Laguna leads the all-time series with the perennial D1 power at 21-13. Breakers will be back in 2020 with their top six scorers all returning.
