Martinez Leads Record Rout

Drake Martinez scored four rushing touchdowns, picked off two pass interceptions, blocked an extra point, and scored for a two-point conversion to lead the Breakers past a surprised Seahawk squad last Friday night at Guyer Field.

The versatile junior scored 32 points to break the all-time single game individual scoring mark and the team eclipsed a 66-year-old mark for game points. Robbie McInerny joined in the record assault setting the single game PAT mark and tying the single game kick scoring mark.

McInerny opened the game with his first of a record eight touchback kickoffs. Ocean View proceeded to grind out an 11-play, 80-yard drive scoring their first touchdown in under three minutes. Robert Clemons returned the kickoff 51 yards to set up Laguna’s first possession on the Seahawk 48-yard line.

One touch of the ball by Martinez and the Breakers were on the scoreboard tying the contest in about 20 seconds.

The two teams traded three-play possessions before Ocean View fumbled the ball on their first play of their third possession of the first quarter. Once again, the Breakers scored on a one-play drive as Clemons scampered 47 yards for the second touchdown.

Seahawks came back to score on a five-play drive with a big-play 62-yard pass-play for the score. Their two-point conversion pass try was broken up.

Nathan Lancaster took the kickoff on the 1-yard line as the Seahawks deliberately kicked away from Clemons.  Their strategy failed as the two Laguna players engineered a reverse on the 12 yard line sending Clemons to an 88 yard kickoff return for the third touchdown.  Breakers scored again two plays later as Martinez picked off an Ocean View pass for his interception return. Breakers were now up 28-13. From this point onward, all Seahawk kicks were deliberatly kicked out-of-bounds to avoid a Laguna return.

On the first play of the second period, Martinez had his fourth touchdown on a 59-yard run to put the score at 34-13. McInerny’s kick was wide.

Breakers added three more points when Zach Jaffe’s interception set up another Laguna possession that stalled allowing McInerny’s 36-yard boot. The Seahawks finally scored again on a five minute 12-play drive but Martinez blocked the PAT making the score Breakers 37-19. Two plays later, Martinez made it 44-19 with a 65-yard run and another Mcinerny point-after. Seahawks added a score just before the intermission on a quick 5-play score to cut the Laguna lead to 18 at the break.

The second half opened with the two teams trading possessions on lack-luster drives before Martinez scored on a one-play 65-yard romp. Ocean View again pulled within 18 points on a 96 yard kick-off return and followed that play with an on-side kick recovery.

That comeback was brief as Martinez intercepted a Seahawk pass on the Laguna eight yard line to end the threat of a comeback. Five plays later, a Larry Stewart to Derek Reigel pass play coupled with a Stewart to Martinez two-point conversion made it 66-24 in the final period.  Norton Penney added the final points but a holding call nullified what could have been a try for 80 points.
