Alta Vista Neighbors Discuss Emergency Access

City administrators and members of the Emergency/Disaster Preparedness Committee will hold a 10 a.m. meeting Saturday, Aug. 13 at the Susi Q Community Center, 380 Third Street, to explain a proposed pilot program in the Alta Vista Way neighborhood.

Existing parking restrictions are inadequate for a fire engine or ambulance to pass, Jordan Villwock, the city’s emergency coordinator, says in a statement.

The program would recommend parking restrictions in specific areas and segments.

Public input will shape the committee’s recommendations to the City Council.

Chris Quilter

Chris Quilter serves as the guest speaker of the Laguna Beach Business Club on Thursday, Aug. 18, which meets at 7:30 a.m. at Hotel Laguna.

Quilter arrived in Laguna with his parents in 1957, but as an adult he worked as a writer for corporate clients in New York. Now retired, he applies those skills as president of the senior center, whose namesake is his mother, and as co-writer of “Lagunatics,” the annual musical parody about life on the coast. He regrets not having a hand in crafting a work of equal hilarity, the Third Street Hitler video that circulated recently.

Non-members are welcome. RSVP to Bart Zandbergen at 949 455-0300 x218.

Another Dream Realized

The estate of Jim and Rosemary Nix has made an additional $250,000 gift to the Laguna Canyon Foundation, a statement from LCF says.

The Laguna Woods couple’s pledge of $500,000 in 2000 brought to life the James and Rosemary Nix Nature Center in the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park six years later. They also funded the monument signs at park staging areas.

LCF plans to use the Nixes’ legacy gift as the seed money to fulfill a longtime dream of starting an endowment, a step towards long-term financial security and sustainability, says a statement.
