Student Promotes Local Battery Collection Site

Laguna Beach high school student Alli Hinmon is leading a campaign to get Laguna residents to dispose of household batteries responsibly.

In 2006, California passed a law making it illegal to discard batteries in your curbside trash cans.

Alli points out that batteries contain harmful chemicals including lead, cadmium and mercury. While they pose no risk to people while in use, when thrown away the chemicals from battery waste percolate into the soil and groundwater. Batteries also release toxins into the air when they are burned in municipal waste combustors, she said.

Alli proposes that battery-recycling bins be placed in everyday places like the grocery store, banks and coffee shops. Numerous locales around the city could have a small unobtrusive battery collection bucket she suggests. Once full, the city of Laguna Beach collection program will take the dead batteries and dispose of them properly, she said.

Watch for the boxes around town and help fill them. Or better yet, buy a collection box to take this small step towards a healthier planet, Alli suggests. The link for purchase is www.fibrexgroup.com.
