The Advanced Chemical Research class taught by Laguna Beach High School chemistry teacher Steve Sogo was recognized with a Golden Bell Award.

Sogo leads a full-year class in which seniors pursue original research projects in teams.

The CSBA Golden Bell Awards promote excellence in education and school board governance by recognizing outstanding programs and governance throughout California.

Eighteen student authors have published in peer-reviewed journals. Three quarters of ACR alumni have gone on to earn degrees in science, technology, engineering and math. Six are now pursuing PhD’s in chemistry, physics, biomedical engineering, and environmental engineering.

“ACR is great training for future scientists. In ACR, students learn how to be real-world problem-solvers, not just good test-takers,” said Sogo. He and Laguna Beach High School Principal Chris Herzfeld will attend the Golden Bell awards program Saturday, Dec. 5 in San Diego.
